McCLAY POST

Commander Jim

Fellow Veterans and Members

We have some exciting news for all members, we have a new restaurant opening at our Post, Fat Lorenzo’s . To start with they will be serving Pasta, Hoagies, Salads and in the near future they will be serving their delicious Pizza. I’ve had their pasta and it’s very good. For right now their hours will be 11 AM to 7 PM. Come on out and enjoy the food, and have a good time.

Our Picnic was held on August 14th, everyone seamed to enjoy themselves as well as the food. I would like to thank all the VFW volunteers who helped put the picnic together, along with the Ladies Auxiliary, Men’s Auxiliary and the American Legion. It was fun and a success, thanks again.

On August 21st the Ladies Auxiliary put on a “Topless” car wash at the Post. Even though there was not much time for advertizing or planning, it went off quite well and actually made money.

We are also planning for another event this fall when the Vikings are playing. When the Miller Lite sign lights up, RAIL drinks and Domestic Beers will be $2.00 and Fat Lorenzo’s will have a special for the Vikings Game.

A membership Appreciation Dance is in the planning stages for October 30th 2010, which will also be a Halloween costume party from 6 PM to Midnight. Remember to bring your current membership card and enjoy the evening. Should be a fun night also a good time to renew old friendships. Check out the advertisement in this publication.

The National Convention is coming up on August 22 - 26, in Indianapolis, IN. This should be an interesting experience for me. I know I’ll come back to our Post with new ideas. Thank you for letting me represent our Post at the Convention.

I’d like to Thank all the volunteers and employees for their support it’s been a very busy month. Without the volunteers the Post would have a difficult time putting events together. Also being able to share ideas to make events even better.

We have several events coming up and need volunteers. If you have some time see me or Lois Hagstrom, President of the Ladies Auxiliary or Tom Tisthammer, President of the Men’s Auxiliary, they will be happy to talk with you. Helping with events can be fun and rewarding also a chance to meet new friends.

Again thank you for your support these past two months. Hope to see you at the Post/Fat Lorenzo’s enjoying a good meal and a reasonably priced adult beverage. Remember our Post meetings are on the 3rd Monday of each month.

Have a good day.

Your Commander ...  Jim

LADIES AUXILIARY

In the last article I neglected to congratulate Debbie Tweet for being elected Sr. Vice Pres. And Jane Meland being elected Guard for Department. I know you both will have a great year. Jane, past president of our auxiliary in 2009-10, received a medallion for President of the year. Way to go!

By the time you receive the Post paper we have had a lot going on. I hope you joined us in some or all of the functions. National Convention in Indianapolis, our V.F.W. and Legion picnic. The V.F.W. Ladies Aux. car wash and the Pancake breakfast in July and Aug. Hopefully we got the “kinks” out in July so the next one will be even better. Thank you to all who helped put it together.

Here are some dates for your calendar: Strata[egg&meat]bake breakfast -Sept/26-8AM-Noon. V.F.W. & Legion Ladies Auxiliaries Bazaar –Oct/16-9AM-3PM, Membership Appreciation Party-Oct/30 6PM-Midnight. Membership Luncheon Nov/6 11AM-1PM. Cancer Luncheon Dec/11, Social hour 11AM-Luncheon  Noon-3PM, Children’s Christmas Party Dec/18 11AM-2PM. {additional information about the Cancer Luncheon and the Children’s Xmas party will be posted in the Nov-Dec edition of your Post Newsletter}.

If you are an annual member don’t forget to pay your dues or better yet check into a life membership.

Past National President, Evelyn McCune spoke at the State Convention and ended her talk with this:

FOUR words you cannot get back,

A STONE after it is thrown

A WORD after it is used

A OCCASION after it is over

And TIME after it is gone.

Take care of yourself because you are important! Lois Hagstrom, Ladies Auxiliary President

Our big fall event this year will a fund raising dinner to commemorate September 11th. We cordially invite the local community to join us in helping to raise money towards the purchase of a K-9 dog for use by the Bloomington Police Department in honor of the exemplary service search and rescue dogs made on that day. In addition to the authentic Italian dinner of spaghetti & meatballs, salad and dessert especially prepared and donated by our new Caterer Fat Lorenzo’s, we will be providing a visual presentation of the 9-11 events and there will be representatives from the Bloomington Fire and Police Departments on hand. The event starts a 5PM and the cost is $10/person or $15/per couple. If you have any questions please e-mail your inquires to manager@vfw1296mn.us   We are changing the phone system here at the VFW and I will soon get a VFW 1296 e-mail address, for now though please send all e-mail to the manager and he will pass the info to me. Our thanks to all of the Post and Auxiliary members that are helping us sell tickets for this event. If you are unable to attend this event I will let you know in our next newsletter posting how it all turned out. Of particular note is our partnership with Fat Lorenzo’s who is donating the food for the spaghetti dinner. Thanks to their generosity, 100% of all ticket sales will go to the fundraiser

We’re also lined up to attend the Fall Conference, and look forward to the information they will be providing to us to help us serve out Post better.

As always, our thanks to the many people in our Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Post for giving us the opportunity to be of service

-President Tom Tisthammer-

MANAGERS MENTIONS

CHANGE & HOPE. A lot of changes are taking place in your Post and we hope that you the members will find it easier to communicate with the Officers and management of the Post and will find new reasons to participate in Post activities.

We are in the process of changing our phone system. The new phone arrangement is not only  less expensive but it has additional features that will help you to contact us and find information about the Post on the Web. For example the manager has a new e-mail address which is manager@vfw1296mn.us - as we become more familiar with the system, officers and some employees will be assigned specific 1296 e-mail address's. As those address are created they will be posted on the Web Site. The web site address is also changing - the new address is www.vfw1296mn.us  -  Commander Jim has authorized me to create a [Facebook] page for the Post. For those of you like me who are not familiar with the Facebook concept it looks to be an interesting experience. I am looking forward to hearing any comments or suggestions you may have.

FOOD your Post has been quite fortunate in having the opportunity to partner with Fat Lorenzo’s {“Italian in a Big way”}. FL [Fat Lorenzo’s] is an established restaurant located on Cedar Ave. in south Minneapolis. Scott, the owner of FL has been looking for a location in Bloomington to compliment his existing site and after an exhaustive search he choose your VFW. Scott’s employees have been here for about a month getting the kitchen and environs properly cleaned and arranged for their purposes. Even though FL is not had its official grand opening (which will be soon) they are open for food service from 11AM to 7PM on a daily basis. Those hours are going to increase in the near future. FL also intends to do a considerable takeout and delivery service, more information about these services will be posted on the Web. You can find additional information about FL at their Web site  -  www.fatlorenzos.com

I believe it proper to single out one of our members for special praise. Past Commander Doug Doerfler has and is performing many tasks around the Post. He has retrofitted the restrooms in the Big Hall, which has really pleased our main lessee [bingo]. Doug has also fabricated a couple of room dividers for use in the bar/restaurant which when completed will be pictured in our web site. Doug has also been very instrumental in the other changes taking place in the Post. I am very lucky to have such an individual around here, he makes my job a lot easier.

I have discovered a great new benefit of being a member of the VFW. The Home Depot stores now give a 10% discount to serving Military and Veterans. When I first heard this I was somewhat skeptical, but I went to Home Depot purchased some items and asked for the discount, upon showing my VFW card I was given said discount. I have also used the discount to purchase items for our Post. I have been told that Menards and Lowes also give the discount but I cannot at this time verify said claim.

Commander Jim has instructed me to offer an adult beverage special during the Vikings games. This special will include $2 rail drinks along with $2 domestic bottle beer during the games. I have also been informed that FL will also offer specials during the games. Could this be the year the Vikes win the Super bowl? As one who has suffered through 4 Super bowl defeats I can only hope.

We will not be providing regular Saturday night bands anymore. The turnout for the live entertainment was spotty at best. We are however going to provide some special Saturday night extravaganzas especially for the membership. Our first such foray will be a Halloween party on Saturday the 30th of October. The event will be open to all, but Members will be able to purchase adult beverages at  greatly reduced prices and Members will also be provided with food deals. Anyone who holds a membership in VFW 1296, the Ladies or Men’s Auxiliary of VFW 1296 will be eligible for said specials. Hope to see you here.

Because of our new Food arraignment some of the regular Post activities have been discontinued e.g. the monthly Walleye night. I am happy to inform you that the Ladies & Men’s Auxiliaries have taken it upon themselves to come up with new and creative ideas to raise money and increase participation in Post functions. I have heard that some VFW’s are having a difficult time keeping their Posts vibrant but thanks to the energetic help of our Ladies & Men’s Auxiliaries I foresee a great future for us.
